A vinyl record is an analog sound storage medium made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It consists of a flat, circular disc with a continuous spiral groove that starts near the outer edge and ends near the center. The groove contains tiny variations (modulations) that correspond to the sound’s waveform.
How It Works
1. Recording Process – In the studio, sound vibrations are converted into electrical signals, which are used to cut a master groove onto a lacquer disc using a lathe. This master is then used to create molds for mass production.
2. Playback Process
- A turntable spins the record at a constant speed (commonly 33⅓, 45, or 78 revolutions per minute).
- A stylus (needle) made of diamond or sapphire sits in the groove.
- As the stylus moves along the groove, the modulations cause it to vibrate.
- These vibrations are converted into electrical signals by the cartridge, then amplified and played through speakers.
With limited exceptions, valid returns are refunded in the form of store credit. Damaged/defective items will be subject to an exchange if in stock.
